my notebook is my
ever present companion
always excited to hear
what i have to say
even if what i write
is crap on paper
my notebook guards
and hoards it
like a dragon watches
its gold
my notebook is a foolish hope
and a miraculous document
no way all those
perfect blank pages
could ever be filled
then lo, one day
i need a new notebook
because somehow
they are
my notebook is a powerful talisman
watch me go through
the ritual motions
lift off the elastic band
set the notebook down
open to the blank page
flip back the ribbon
tip of pencil touches paper
and i am suddenly
a poet
